Epiphany at St Mary's, Forest Hall

Tonight we celebrated the Epiphany with Missa Cantata at St Mary's celebrated by Parish Priest Fr Michael Brown. The Schola Sancti Baedae provided the music with the Ordinary sung to 'Missa de Angelis'. Following Mass Father blessed the chalk for the traditional marking of homes. The evening was completed with a shared table. It seems a great shame that our hierarchy have moved this feast (one of the oldest in the Church) to a Sunday, yet another example of the 'dumbing down' of our Faith. Surely, in this day & age, it is easier than ever before to attend Mass on Holydays & yet lazy Catholics are pandered to to make their lives even easier. SHAME!!

  1. Another disadvantage of Epiphany, Ascension, Corpus Christi etc. having been moved to Sundays is for children at Catholic schools, who now miss out on these celebrations (and associated catechesis) in their schools. Most of these children won't be attending Mass on the sundays.

Well done to the Anglicans for maintaining the feasts on the proper days. Let's hope that the Anglican Ordinariate will have a positive effect on the Catholic bishops in terms of providing more possibilities for these great feasts to be celebrated on the correct days.

In the meantime, I am continuing to ask priests to celebrate OF votive Masses of the Epiphany, Ascension, Corpus Christi etc. on the correct days, for the benefit of those of us who are unable to make it to an EF Mass on those days. Whether such Masses are allowed seems to be a grey area, but I did manage to persuade one priest to celebrate such a Mass on 6 Jan last year (and everyone seemed to be grateful afterwards).
